BHARAT SANCHAR NIGAM LIMITED Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) was incorporated on September 15, 2000. It took over the business of providing of telecom services and network management from the erstwhile Government of India’s Departments of Telecom Services (DTS) (DoT) and Telecom Operations (DTO), with effect from October 1, 2000 on going concern basis. It is one of the largest and leading public sector units providing comprehensive range of telecom services in India. Its logo has a grey coloured globe circumnavigated by red and blue arrows in opposite directions. RURAL POSTAL LIFE INSURANCE Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) came into being as a sequel to the recommendations of the  Official Committee for Reforms in the Insurance Sector (Malhotra Committee). The Committee had observed in 1993 that only 22percent of the insurable population in this country had been insured; life insurance funds accounted for only 10 percent of the gross household savings.  The Committee had observed that Rural Branch Postmasters who enjoy a position of trust  in the community  have the capacity to canvass life insurance business within their respective areas. The Government accepted the recommendations of Malhotra Committee  and allowed Postal Life Insurance to extend its coverage to the rural areas to transact life insurance business with effect from March 24, 1995, mainly because of the vast network of Post Offices in the rural areas and low cost of operations. INDIA POST For more than 150 years, the Department of Post (DoP) has been the backbone of the India’s communication and has played a crucial role in the country’s socio-economic development. It touches the lives of Indian citizens in many ways: delivering mails, accepting deposits under Small Savings Schemes, providing life insurance cover under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) and providing retail services like bill collection, sale of forms, etc. The DoP also acts as an agent for Government of India in discharging other services for citizens such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) wage disbursement and old age pension payments. With 1,55,618 Post Offices, the DoP has the most widely distributed postal network in the world.
