ANTHROPOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) is the one and the only one of its kind anywhere in the world to pursue Anthropological research in a governmental setup. The Anthropological Survey of India's genesis was from the Zoological and Anthropological section of the Indian Museum, which became the Zoological Survey of India in 1916. In 1945, Anthropology section of the Zoological Survey was carved out to become the Anthropological Survey of India. Its brown colour circular logo has a minimalist depiction of human form in the centrewith its name written in Devanagari and English in its circular border. Below the human form is written its motto in Sanskrit ‘न मानुषाश्रेष्टतरं हि किचित् ’ meaning ‘None is greater than man’. Anthropologist Suresh K. Singh says the epic (Mahabharata) ends on a note of sadness and the ‘Futility of Human Effort’.
