TAMIL UNIVERSITY The Tamil University was established at Thanjavur, by the Government of Tamil Nadu on September 15, 1981 under the provision of the Tamil University Act No.9 of 1982 and was recognized by the University Grants Commission on June 11,1985. The idea of a separate university for Tamil language was mooted in 1925 and took shape in 1981 under Dr. M. G. Ramachandran. The university is enshrined with the motto ‘உள்ளுவதெல்லாம் உயர்வுள்ளல்’, which means ‘What All You Think,Think Highly of…’. The emblem of the university has a Mollweide projection of the earth to symbolise the worldwide reach of the Tamil language forming the backdrop for the motifs of Thanjavur Brihadeeswara Temple gopuram - representing the cradle of Tamil civilisation; its motto in Tamil; a peacock, the vehicle of Lord Murugan; a bunch of palm leaf manuscripts depicting the history of Tamil; language and a veena and cymbals representing Tamil music tradition.
