INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR POPULATION SCIENCES The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, was established in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and the United Nations. It was declared as a 'Deemed to be University' on August 14, 1985 by the Government of India. The insignia of the institute has a circular emblem and a wheel made of icons of twelve persons holding hands placed inside a circle and surrounded by a pair of laurels and supported by a traditional lamp. These are ensconced by a border with the name and place of the institute and its motto in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ meaning ‘Lead Me from Darkness to Light’ are written.
