HIMACHAL PRADESH UNIVERSITY The circular emblem of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has a motif of snow clad HImalayas with flowing river below and an open book supporting a trishul or trident. These motifs are ensconced by a white circular border with black outlines which carries its name in Devanagari and English along with its motto in Sanskrit ‘शस्त्रे शास्त्रे च कौशलम्’ meaning ‘Skill in Tools and Scriptures’. The rivers and the mountain represent the geography of the university’s location; the open book denotes education, learning, knowledge and wisdom and the trident or trishul represent the local temples and God. The trishul represents the three aspects of consciousness - waking, dreaming and sleeping and it means the three gunas - satva, rajas and tamas.
