BHARATHIAR UNIVERSITY The Bharathiar University was established at Coimbatore by the Government of Tamilnadu in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982). The erstwhile Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras formed the core of the Bharathiar University, which was functioning at Coimbatore before 1982. University Grants Commission (UGC) recognized the university in 1985 for grants. The emblem of the university has a portrait of Tamil poet Bharathiyar and motifs of fish representing the kingdom of Pandyas, tiger representing the kingdom of Cholas, five books denoting knowledge,education and wisdom and a bow and arrow symbolising the kingdom of Cheras. These are ensconced in an orange gear wheel, which bears the name and place of the university in Tamil and English.
