FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun has its roots in the erstwhile Imperial Forest Research Institute established in 1906 to organise and lead forestry research in the country. The institute also administered training to forest officers and forest rangers in the country. After independence it was named as Forest Research Institute and Colleges. In 1988, FRI and its research centres were brought under the administrative umbrella of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India. The green and black circular emblem of the university has a flower of an orchid placed in a green circle surrounded by a white border which carries the name and place of the university in Devanagari and English.

INDIAN COUNCIL OF FORESTRY RESEARCH AND EDUCATION Indian Council of Forestry Reserach and Education (ICFRE) was initiated towards the end of the nineteenth century with the advent of scientific forestry in India and the establishment of the Forest School in Dehradun in 1878. It was on June 5, 1906 subsequently that the Imperial Forest Research Institute was founded by the Government of India for taking forward forestry research in the country. In 1986 the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education or ICFRE was formed. On June 1, 1991, the ICFRE was declared an autonomous Council under the then Ministry of Environment and Forests and registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Its regional research institutes are located at Jodhpur, Dehradun, Shimla, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Ranchi, Bengaluru, Jorhat and Jabalpur, and the centres are at Agartala, Aizawl, Allahabad, Chhindwara and Visakhapatnam.
