NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY & FORENSIC SCIENCE The National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science (NICFS) (formerly the ‘Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science’) came into existence on January 4, 1972 on the recommendations of a Committee appointed by the University Grants Commission to look into the applied aspects of education, training and research in the fields of Criminology and Forensic Science to commensurate with the growing needs of the country in general and the Criminal Justice System in India in particular. In September 1976, the Institute was constituted as a separate department under the Ministry of Home Affairs headed by a full time Director.
