UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA
UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA The Court of Directors of the East India Company sent a despatch in July, 1854 to the Governor-General of India in Council, suggesting the establishment of the Universities of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. The University of Calcutta was founded on January 24, 1857. The University adopted in the first instance, the pattern of the University of London. The seal of the university has changed seven times till date and the current seal is a modified version of its previous version. The seal of the university is circular and houses the motifs of a eight petalled lotus circumscribed by a glowing sun ensconced in a circle. These are held by a circular border on which its name and its motto ‘Advancement of Learning’ are inscribed. The lotus symbolises purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty and the sun symbolises life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity.
