NATIONAL RURAL HEALTH MISSION India’s flagship health sector programme, National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was launched on April 12, 2005. The mission aims to provide accessible, affordable and quality healthcare to the rural population, especially the vulnerable groups. The focus area of the mission is on establishing a fully functional, community owned and decentralised health delivery system with inter-sectoral convergence at all levels to ensure simultaneous action on a wide range of determinants of health such as water, sanitation, education, nutrition, social and gender equality. The goals of NRHM include Reduction in Infant mortality rate and maternal mortality ratio; universal access to public health services for women’s health, child health, water, hygiene, sanitation and nutrition and prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, including locally endemic diseases. NATIONAL HEALTH MISSION The National Health Mission (NHM) encompasses its two sub-missions, The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and The National Urban Health Mission (NUHM). The main programmatic components include health system strengthening, Reproductive-Maternal- Neonatal-Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) and communicable and non-communicable diseases. Its emblem is a pictorial with a red colour segment of an oval serving as a shelter, in which the icons of a family - a man, a girl child and a woman are shown. Above them a yellow sun is shining. The name of the mission is written above the oval in English and at the bottom in Devanagari in black.
