Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior was established by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Government of India as Lakshmibai College of Physical Education (LCPE) in August 1957. The Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development conferred the status of a Deemed to be University in September 1995 under Section 3 of U.G.C. Act, 1956. The emblem of the institute has a torch of flame supported by a pair of crossed maces and an open book. The motto of the institute in Sanskrit ‘शरीर माध्यम् खलु धर्म साधनम्’ (Kumarasambhavam 5.33Kalidasa) meaning ‘This Body is surely the Foremost Instrument of Doing (Good) Deeds’ is written below the open book. Below these its name is written in Devanagari and English on a white banner with red outlines. On a tag attached to the banner India is written in Devanagari and English. The torch with flame is an emblem of enlightenment, hope, life, truth and the regenerative power and the open book symbolises education, knowledge and wisdom. The mace of Hanuman is a symbol of authority and physical strength. It is also a symbol of the destroyer of evil and removes Adharma and ushers in Dharma. Mace is also referred to as Gada or Club.
