Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology (PMIST) has evolved from Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women established in 1988, by the Periyar Maniammai Educational and Charitable Society. Since August 17, 2007 it has been functioning as Deemed to be University. The emblem of the institute has a four coloured hexagon divided into four parts of cyan, orange, yellow and red. These hold the motifs of open book, torch, Mortarboard hat and a set of four meshing gears respectively. The hexagon is circumscribed by its name and its acronym. The open book symbolises education, knowledge and wisdom; the torch with flame is an emblem of enlightenment, hope, life, truth and the regenerative power; the mortarboard hat or Oxford hat denotes educational achievement, equality, tradition and rites of passage and the set of meshing gears denote interconnectedness; efficiency and precision; progress and advancement; synchronisation and timing and order and structure. The colours, cyan denote wood in the five elements; orange denotes energy, vitality, creativity, inspiration, joy and happiness; yellow denotes happiness, energy, vitality, focus and creativity and red denotes passion, power, strength, courage, determination, energy and celebration.
