Anna University (AU) was established on September 4, 1978 as a unitary type of university. This was named after C. N. Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The emblem of the university has a motif of an industrial unit with chimney representing the application and practice of engineering supported by an open book symbolising education, knowledge and wisdom are ensconced by a gear wheel which represents interconnectedness; efficiency and precision; progress and advancement; synchronisation and timing and order and structure. On the gear wheel, the name of the university is inscribed. At the bottom, on an oblong banner the motto of the university ‘Progress Through Knowledge’ is written.
