The Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science & Technology (PRIST) was founded in 1985 by Prof. P. Murugesan. It was initially known as the Institute of Computer Science and Technology. In 1988, the institute received affiliation from Bharathidasan University to offer postgraduate diploma programmes in computer applications. The emblem of the university has a blue and red shield supported by a pair of laurels. The shield holds the motifs of a temple ‘vimana’, an open book, a satellite and a gear wheel. At its right its name and status are written. The shield symbolises protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the ‘vimana’ symbolises divine blessings to all its stakeholders; the open book symbolises education, knowledge and wisdom; the satellite represents science and technology; the laurels are symbols of victory and achievement and the gear wheel denotes interconnectedness; efficiency and precision; progress and advancement; synchronisation and timing and order and structure.
