Gangadhar Meher University (GMU), Sambalpur came into existence on May 30, 2015 as a unitary institution of higher learning through the Government of Odisha order No.11598/HE dated May 30, 2015 by redesignating the erstwhile Gangadhar Meher College (Autonomous). The university’s emblem bears the name of the university and the year of its inception. The rays of the sun symbolise the cultural renaissance brought by the university. The Wheel of Konark stands for the architectural glory of Odisha. The atomic fission symbolises the dawn of the atomic era. The diamond represents strength and crystalline purity, brightness and glory of the erstwhile Hirakhand Empire of which Sambalpur was the capital. The book is the sign of study and research and the Hirakud Dam symbolises the harnessing of nature by men for the service of humanity and gives the crest its local feel. The motto is an extract from the Kathopanishad ‘विद्ययाऽमृतमश्नुते’, (Shloka 11, Ishopanishad) meaning ‘Immortality is Gained from Learning’.
