The red and black emblem of the Kannur University has a monogram of its acronym ‘KU’ in red forming an unique shape where it appears that life is sprouting out. This is supporting a rising sun above an open book. These are surmounted by a banner which bears the motto of the university in Malayalam ‘തമസോമാ ജ്യോതിർഗമയ’ (Yajnavalkya,1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘From Darkness Lead me to Light’ is written. At the bottom, on a banner, the name of the university is inscribed. The sun symbolises life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity and the open book symbolises knowledge, wisdom and education.
