Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU) is a State open university located in Kota, Rajasthan, India. It was established in 1987 and is named after Vardhman Mahaveer, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. The circular emblem of the university has an atomic structure, a veena, an open book, its name and place and its year of establishment on a yellow circle with a red border. This is surrounded by a sixteen petalled lotus in black and a brown border, which carries the name of the university in Devanagari and banner bearing its motto in Sanskrit ‘सा विध्या या विमुक्तये meaning ‘That is Knowledge, which Liberates’ at the bottom. Veena is a musical instrument with deep roots in Indian classical music and it denotes Goddess Saraswati, the God of Learning, harmony, balance, wisdom, knowledge and meditation; atomic structure denotes the scope of science education and its depth; open book denotes knowledge and wisdom and lotus embodies profound spiritual concepts and serves as a reminder of the potential for growth, transformation and spiritual enlightenment that exists within each individual and its enduring beauty and symbolic power have made it a timeless emblem across cultures. The colour brown represents earthiness, simplicity, stability, humility, warmth, reliability, endurance, timelessness and tradition and the colour yellow denotes happiness, energy, vitality, focus and creativity and green denotes life, production, fertility, agriculture and village.
