UNIVERSITY OF LUCKNOW
UNIVERSITY OF LUCKNOW |
The idea of starting a University at Lucknow was first mooted by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan of Mahmudabad, who contributed an article to the columns of The Pioneer urging the foundation of a university at Lucknow. It was resolved that the University of Lucknow should be a unitary, teaching and residential university of the kind recommended by the Calcutta University Mission, 1919. The Court of the University was constituted in March, 1921. The other university authorities such as the Executive Council, the Academic Council and the faculties came into existence in August and September, 1921. On July 17, 1921, the university started teaching both formal and informal. The yellow, red violet and cyan emblem of the university represents the confluence of the Ganges and the Jumna, symbolised by wavy waters, between two fishes which is a Buddhist symbol signifying freedom from restraint and the life-giving properties of water, symbolising the two rivers. Between the fishes there is a traditional book reading stand with an open book on it. The words ‘Light and Learning’ are written on it. This is topped by a traditional burning lamp in a red background. At the button on a purple banner, the name of the university is written. Open book denotes knowledge and wisdom and the traditional lamp represents light, path for growth and way forward.
