Vidyasagar University, named after one of the most illustrious sons of Bengal as well as one of the doyens of Indian Renaissance, Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. The Government of West Bengal decided in 1978 to establish Vidyasagar University. The circular emblem of the university in blue colour has four conjoint tridents placed within a circle supported by an eight petalled lotus is placed in the centre of a circular border, which carries the name of the university and its motto in Bengali ‘শিক্ষা জ্ঞান প্রগতি’ meaning ‘Education Knowledge Progress’. The conjoint trishul or trident denotes power, balance, spiritual awakening, protection, divine trinity and Lord Shiva’s attributes and the lotus denotes purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty. The colour blue represents serenity, calmness, trust, spirituality, calmness, wisdom, freedom, openness, intelligence and loyalty.
