The Chanakya National Law University was established on July 15, 2006 under the Chanakya National Law University Act, 2006 (Bihar Act No. 24 of 2006. It is located in Nyaya Nagar of Patna. The emblem of the university has an yellow ochre circle which carries the motifs of an open book and wings surmounted by a flame, a lectern, a pair of robes , a banner carrying the text ‘Patna’ and crested by its motto in Sanskrit ‘ज्ञानधनं महद्दधनम्’ (Chanakya) meaning ‘The Wealth of Knowledge is a Great Wealth’. The flame symbolises the light of knowledge; the book symbolises education, knowledge and wisdom; the waves symbolise liberty of thought and expression; the robes denote inclusiveness and fraternity; the lectern means justice, fairness, equality and authority; the colour yellow ochre optimism and warning to cowardice and segregation .and the colour red symbolises passion, power, strength, courage, determination, energy and celebration.
