MADURAI KAMARAJ UNIVERSITY

Established in 1966, Madurai Kamaraj University as a State University. The coat of arms of the university is a blue shield supported by a red banner on which its motto in Tamil ‘மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பதறிவு’ which mean ‘To Seek Truth is Knowledge’. The shield is divided into eight parts and they carry different motifs. The Gopuram of Pandya dynasty is placed in the top middle; burning traditional lamp on its left and an open book on its right; In the middle a pink lotus supported on either side by an elephant and a rocket and a pair of fish at the bottom. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the gopuram symbolises the architectural heritage of the ancient city of Madurai; the lamp denotes symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the book symbolises knowledge, education and wisdom; the lotus denotes purity and clarity; the elephant symbolises tradition; the rocket symbolises modernity and the fish are the emblem of Pandya Dynasty.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
