The University of Jammu and Kashmir was founded in 1948. In the year 1969 it was bifurcated into University of Kashmir (UoK) at Srinagar and University of Jammu at Jammu. The UoK is situated at Hazratbal in Srinagar. The orange and brown circular emblem of the university has a tree, a glowing torch and an open book held in a circle and ensconced by a brown banner on which its motto in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ (Yajnavalkya,1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘From Darkness Lead me to Light’ on one side and its name in Kashmiri on the other side. At the bottom, on a banner, the name of the university is written. The tree symbolises strength, individuality and expression, calmness, growth and the interconnectedness of everything; the torch with flame is an emblem of enlightenment, hope, life, truth and the regenerative power; the open book denotes education, knowledge and wisdom; the colour orange denotes energy, vitality, creativity, inspiration, joy and happiness and the colour brown signifies earthiness, simplicity, stability, humility, warmth, reliability, endurance, timelessness and tradition.
