The University of Ladakh (UoL) was established in 2019 and is the only trans-Himalayan Institute of higher learning and research with headquarters and campuses both in Leh and Kargil. The insignia of the university has a shield placed within a nine petalled lotus supported by a pair of laurels. The shield holds the motif of rising sun, supported by its acronym and ensconced by four hands holding one another and its motto ‘March Forth’. The top two corners of the shield have the motifs of Asiatic ibex. At the bottom, on a banner the name of the university and its year of establishment are written. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the ibex denotes the Union Territory of Ladakh; the rising sun denotes light, universal prosperity and path for growth; the four hand holding the other denotes cooperation, unity, togetherness and strength; the lotus symbolise purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty; the laurels denote ceremonies, victory, achievement, hard work and dedication; the colour brown symbolises earthiness, stability, humility, reliability, endurance and tradition.
