Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU) Kameshwaranagar, Darbhanga is an outcome of long cherished desire of the people of Mithila. The Lalit Narayan Mithila University with its headquarters at Darbhanga was established by an ordinance in 1972. Its red colour emblem has a rising sun placed in the middle of a hexagram surrounded by a eight petalled lotus and circumscribed by a border bearing its motto in Sanskrit ‘आत्मा वा अरे द्रष्टव्यः’ (Verse 2.4.5, Section IV - Yajnavalkya and Maitreyi (I), Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘The Self should be Realised’ and its name in Devanagari, separated by a pair of fish. The rising sun denotes light, universal prosperity and path for growth; the hexagram means symbolises spiritual oneness and in Hinduism it is known as shatkon, six faces or shanmukha and it is considered the union of Shiv (Male) and Shakti (Female); the lotus means purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty; the fish symbolise rebirth, fertility, the unconscious or higher self, luck, change, health and feelings and the colour red symbolises passion, power, strength, courage, determination, energy and celebration.
