The Bundelkhand University came into existence on August 26, 1975, by the Government of Uttar Pradesh Notification No. 10/15-60/74 under the provision of the Uttar Pradesh Universities Act. The circular emblem of the university has the silhouette motif of Rani of Jhansi with palm trees on each side supported by its year of founding and a traditional lamp with swans on water on each side. All these are ensconced by a circular border on which its name in Devanagari and English and its motto in Sanskrit ‘विद्ययाऽमृतमश्नुते’ (Shloka 11, Ishopanishad) meaning ‘Immortality is Gained from Learning’. The Rani of Jhansi is one of the leading freedom fighters; the palm trees represent the local landscape; the swans on water denote the local folk art of Bundelkhand; the traditional lamp denotes light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity.
