BERHAMPUR UNIVERSITY
BERHAMPUR UNIVERSITY |
The Berhampur University (BU) was established on January 2, 1967. The university was later shifted to the present site known as Bhanja Bihar, named after the celebrated poet of Orissa Upendra Bhanja. The emblem of the university has a shield holding the motifs of a sailing ship depicting the regions rich sea faring legacy of Gopalpur in Odisha; the Sun Temple of Konark representing Odisha’s art and culture; a traditional lamp symbolising light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity and an open book symbolising knowledge, wisdom and education. The name of the university in Odiya surmounts the lamp and book. The name of the university is written below the shield. Its motto in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ (Yajnavalkya,1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘From Darkness Lead me to Light’ is written above the motifs. The shield symbolises protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery.
