UNIVERSITY OF ALLAHABAD

Image
UNIVERSITY OF ALLAHABAD Established on September 23, 1887, it is the fourth oldest university of India after Calcutta, Bombay and Madras universities. The credit for conceiving a large Central College in Allahabad (now named as Prayagraj), eventually to develop into a university, goes to Sir William Muir, Lieutenant Governor of United Provinces. In the millennium year, the University of Allahabad had become a Central University. The emblem of the university has a banyan tree spreading across to fill the circle, supported by nourishing waters of Ganga Yamuna and Saraswati and earth is ensconced by a border on which, its name and motto in Latin ‘Quot Rami Tot Arbores’ meaning ‘As Many Branches So Many Trees’ are inscribed. Banyan tree means perpetual growth, Unending expansion, eternity and sacredness.
