NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SIKKIM National Institute of Technology Sikkim (NIT Sikkim or NIT SKM) is a public engineering and research institution near the city of Ravangla in Sikkim. It is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India and has been declared as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The brown colour circular emblem of NITSKM using its acronym ‘NITS’ is a monogram, while ‘N’ and ‘T’ form the ‘pi’ symbol and the ‘i’ with the dot in yellow symbolising an enlightened person or student. The ‘S’ is written with a nice flourish dividing the circle into two halves making it look like ‘yin-yang’. SIKKIM POLICE Sikkim had become a protectorate of British India in 1861 and this had triggered off a spate of activity in the State.  The first political officer of Sikkim, Claude White thought that with the increase in population, crime would be more prevalent and felt it necessary to raise a police force. It was on the Novembr 27, 1897 that a force consisting of 1 Head Constable and 5 Constables was posted at Aritar near Rhenock on the authority of a resolution passed by the King of Sikkim in the council. Sikkim Police was thus born. Till the early thirties, the highest post in the police hierarchy was Senior Sub Inspector. A post of Police Inspector was created in 1934. It was only in 1949 that the force came to be looked after by officers from India on deputation. Shri Mohinder Singh was the first Commissioner of Police who joined in 1953 and till his tenure in 1960 set up the Traffic Branch, the Check Post Branch, the Intelligence Branch, and the Fire Brigade. EMBLEM OF SIKKIM Sikkim joined the Indian Union on May 16, 1975. The emblem of the State of Sikkim is based on Buddhist elements. The lotus or ‘padma’ is a symbol of purity is a symbol of the attainment of enlightenment. The conch shell or ‘sankha’ is the symbol of the spoken word. It is also one of the symbols Vishnu has in his hands. The conch shell symbolizes religious power. The dragon - ‘druk’ symbolises renewal and transformation and it is the symbol of the Chinese Emperor. A couple of dragons mean that the symbol enclosed is of the ruler. Thus it can be interpreted as 'The Government of the Enlightened Religious Leader'.
