CHARKHA

Image
CHARKHA The ‘Charkha’ or spinning wheel, is a powerful symbol representing various ideals, most prominently Swadeshi (self-reliance), economic independence, and the dignity of labour. It became a potent emblem of India's freedom movement, particularly through the work of Mahatma Gandhi. The charkha symbolised the rejection of foreign goods, particularly British textiles, and promoted the use of locally produced cloth (khadi). It symbolised the potential for social and economic upliftment through simple, manual labour. It was a symbol of unity, as people from all walks of life engaged in spinning, and equality, as it was seen as a means to reduce poverty and promote a more equitable society. The charkha also represents India's spirit of resilience and its connection to its traditional crafts. It fostered a sense of collective effort and national pride.
