NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN In 1957 the Government of India requested the Ford Foundation to invite Charles and Ray Eames to visit India. Charles and Ray Eames travelled to all parts of the country, meeting and talking to writers, craftspeople, architects, scientists, industrialists, educators and philosophers. On April 7, 1958, the Eameses presented the India Report to the Government of India. Based on the recommendations made in the India Report, the Government of India with the assistance of the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family established the National Institute of Industrial Design, as it was originally called as an autonomous all-India body in September 1961 at Ahmedabad. Today the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, has grown into a multi-campus institute with campuses at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru and has been declared an Institution of National Importance by the Act of Parliament. The logo introduced in November 2022 is an updated version of the earlier logo which depicted the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque jaali has been spruced up to perform better across all media, its colour darkened and the acronym changed to ‘IIMA’. While releasing the logo and a new website on November 3, the Board of Governors at IIM A in an official statement said, “As IIMA and its ethos shapes and adapts to global shifts, the institute felt the need to re-envision the IIMA website and renew its visual identity, which is represented by its logo. LALIT KALA AKADEMI To promote and propagate understanding of Indian art, both within and outside the country, the Government of India established Lalit Kala Akademi (National Akademi of Arts) at New Delhi in 1954. The Akademi has regional centres called Rashtriya Lalit Kala Kendras at Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, Garhi in New Delhi and Bhubaneswar with workshop facilities in painting, sculpture, print-making and ceramics. It has sub centres in Shimla, Ahmedabad, Agartala and Patna. Since its inception, the Akademi has been organising national exhibition of contemporary Indian art with 15 national awards,. Every three years, the Akademi also organises Triennial India, an international exhibition of contemporary art in New Delhi. The Akademi honours eminent artists and art historians every year by electing them as Fellows of the Akademi.
