AVINASHILINGAM INSTITUTE FOR HOME SCIENCE & HIGHER EDUCATION FOR WOMEN Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women (AIHSHEW), Coimbatore was established as an aided college by Padma Bhushan Dr. T. S. Avinashilingam under the auspices of the Avinashilingam Education Trust in 1957. Dr. Rajammal P. Devadas, doyen of Home Science nurtured the institution. The emblem of the university is a traditional ‘kuthuvilakku’, a veena, a lotus and a book are placed in front of a traditionally decorated house ensconced by a circular line around which the name of the university is written. At the bottom the motto of the university ‘Seek and Ye Shall Find’ is written. The kuthuvilakku symbolises knowledge. Its shape forms the image of a human in ‘dhyana mudra’, the base symbolising yogic sitting posture, the stem denotes the erect body, the top denotes the face and the five wicks denote the five elements (panchabhutas).
