ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY The insignia of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU) has a circular seal supported by a blue banner bearing its motto in Sanskrit ‘आरोग्यमेव अटल अमृतम्’ meaning ‘Health is the Ultimate Nectar’. The emblem houses the motifs of the Staff of Caduceus or the Staff of Hermes with a pair of wings and entwined serpents supporting rising sun and supported by an open book at the bottom and a pair of fish on sides on a white circle. The circle is ensconced in a blue border which carries its name in English and Devanagari. The sun denotes life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity; the staff denotes medicine and medical profession; the fish represent the State of Uttar Pradesh and the open book denotes education, learning, knowledge and wisdom.

UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION In his speech, Shri Vajpayee spoke of the need to take a fresh look at the UGC Act, 1956 in the light of the new challenges for the education sector emerging in the twenty-first century. He also suggested that the Commission could consider changing its name to the University Education Development Commission and have a new identity. Traditionally, UGC was entrusted with the task of coordination, formulation and maintenance of the standards of university education. The logo and the motto line of UGC ‘Gyan-Vigyan Vimukte’ (Knowledge Liberates), convey the UGC’s philosophy and avowed objective of uplifting the nation’s destiny through quality education. Knowledge is like both light and sound. Like light, it enlightens and empowers the individual and society as a whole, enabling them to overcome limitations imposed by nature.
