National Institute of Design (NID)
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN

In 1957 the Government of India requested the Ford Foundation to invite Charles and Ray Eames to visit India. Charles and Ray Eames travelled to all parts of the country, meeting and talking to writers, craftspeople, architects, scientists, industrialists, educators and philosophers. On April 7, 1958, the Eameses presented the India Report to the Government of India. Based on the recommendations made in the India Report, the Government of India with the assistance of the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family established the National Institute of Industrial Design, as it was originally called as an autonomous all-India body in September 1961 at Ahmedabad. Today the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, has grown into a multi-campus institute with campuses at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru and has been declared an Institution of National Importance by the Act of Parliament. The logo of NID was designed by Adrian Frutiger. He “designed a word mark for the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India. Originally, the institute was named National Design Institute, however, the institute renamed itself to match Adrian Frutiger's stylized NID logotype alongside the name 'National Institute of Design'.
