THE ENGLISH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES UNIVERSITY The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, was founded in 1958 as the Central Institute of English (CIE). In addition to regular teacher training programmes, CIF set benchmarks through its various conferences, refresher courses and syllabus design ventures. It was therefore renamed the Central Institute of Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in 1972 with the addition of major foreign languages - German, Russian and French. In 1973, CIEFL was awarded the status of a deemed university. Two new campuses were set up in Shillong (1973) and Lucknow (1979) to cater for the needs of language practitioners in North East and the North. The Educational Media Research Centre (EMRC) was established at CIFL in 1984 with the objective of designing and telecasting programmes in different disciplines. CENTRAL INSTITUTE OF INDIAN LANGUAGES The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) is entrusted with the responsibility of conducting research in language analysis, pedagogy, technology and use. All its research and development activities are directed towards solving problems related to language that emerge in various socio-cultural domains such as education, literacy, mass media, governance, and emotional integration. Its monogram is created out of its acronym ‘CIIL’ in light brown and red colours. The two ‘i’s have their dots in red colour and placed on top in the first ‘i’ and in the bottom in the second ‘i’ resembling a scroll of yester years.
