GOVERNMENT ARTS COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS), SALEM (GASC SALEM) The emblem of Government Arts College (Autonomous), Salem (GASC Salem) features a yellow shield with cyan outlines housing the motifs of a lotus held by a pair of elephants, the tower of the college, a bow and arrow and a ‘kuthuthuvilakku’ (traditional lamp). The shield is supported by a banner inscribed with the motto of the college in Tamil ‘அறிவு ஆற்றல் இனிமை’ meaning ‘Intelligence Power Sweetness’. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the lotus refers to purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty; the bow and arrow symbolises intellectual strength, skill, focus, and purpose, readiness for battle, protection, and guidance; and the lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity.
