ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES MADURAI (AIIMS MADURAI)
ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES MADURAI (AIIMS MADURAI) The circular emblem of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Madurai (AIIMS Madurai) features a Staff of Caduceus or Staff of Hermes entwined by a pair of serpents and crested by lotus ensconced by a circular border inscribed with the name of the Institute in Devanagari and English. The seal is supported by the motto of the Institute in Sanskrit ‘शरीरमाद्यं खलु धर्मसाधनम्’ meaning Kumarasambhavam by Mahakavi Kalidasa. It means a ‘Healthy Body is the Means of Fulfillment of Dharma that is Duty’. The staff with the snake has long been a symbol of medicine and the medical profession. It originates from the story of Asclepius, who was revered by the ancient Greeks as a god of healing and whose cult involved the use of snakes. The lotus denotes purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty.
