GOVERNMENT ARTS COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, SALEM (GACWS)
GOVERNMENT ARTS COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, SALEM (GACWS) The emblem of Government Arts College for Women, Salem (GACWS) features a square standing on one its corner housing the motifs of a palm leaf manuscript, a range of hills, a ‘kuthuvilakku’, a traditional lamp worshipped with flowers and a factory. The square is supported by a red banner inscribed with the motto of the college in Tamil ‘அறிவு அற்றம் காக்கும்’ (Thiruvalluvar, 421, Thirukkural) meaning ‘Wisdom that Crosses the Sea of Weariness’. The palm leaf manuscripts denote traditional knowledge, learning, education and wisdom; the range of hills refer to the local geography; the lamp and its worshipping hands refer to light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the factory symbolises industry, manufacturing and growth.
