It is named after the eponymous queen Rani Channamma of Kittur, the first woman freedom fighter of India. The emblem of the university has an orange coloured open book supporting a flame of light and holding a black silhouette image of Rani Channamma with a rising sun a s backdrop.  The emblem is crested by a its name written in Kannada and at the bottom of the emblem its motto in Sanskrit ‘विद्वान् सर्वत्र पूज्यते’ meaning ‘The Learned are Worshipped Everywhere’ is written. BHARATHIDASAN UNIVERSITY Bharathidasan University (BDU) was established in February 1982 and was named after the Tamil poet, Bharathidasan. The motto of the university ‘We Will Create a Brave New World’ meaning ‘புதியதோர் உலகம் செய்வோம்’. The Bharathidasan Institute of Management known as BIM is located within the BHEL premises, a public sector undertaking at Thiruverumbur. The emblem of the university has a portrait of Bharathidasan supported by a lotus holding a traditional lamp and surmounted by its name and place in Tamil and English. Below the lotus, on a yellow banner, its motto is written in Tamil and English.
