The emblem of Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports - Patiala (NSNIS) has the foot of Hermes, the great messenger of the gods in Greek mythology, who is one of the twelve gods of Mount Olympus. Hermes famously wore winged sandals so he could fly between the heavens, the earth and the underworld. This is supported by a pair of laurels representing ceremonies, victory, achievement, hard work and dedication and crested by the National Emblem. At the bottom on a brown banner the name of the institution is written.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
