The emblem of Government Arts College for Women, Salem (GACWS) features a square standing on one its corner housing  the motifs of a palm leaf manuscript, a range of hills, a ‘kuthuvilakku’, a traditional lamp worshipped with flowers and a factory. The square is supported by a red banner inscribed with the motto of the college in Tamil ‘அறிவு அற்றம் காக்கும்’ (Thiruvalluvar, 421, Thirukkural) meaning ‘Wisdom that Crosses the Sea of ​​Weariness’. The palm leaf manuscripts denote traditional knowledge, learning, education and wisdom; the range of hills refer to the local geography; the lamp and its worshipping hands refer to light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the factory symbolises industry, manufacturing and growth.
