HIMACHAL PRADESH UNIVERSITY

The circular emblem of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has a motif of snow clad HImalayas with flowing river below and an open book supporting a trishul or trident. These motifs are ensconced by a white circular border with black outlines which carries its name in Devanagari and English along with its motto in Sanskrit ‘शस्त्रे शास्त्रे च कौशलम्’ meaning ‘Skill in Tools and Scriptures’. The rivers and the mountain represent the geography of the university’s location; the open book denotes education, learning, knowledge and wisdom and the trident or trishul represent the local temples and God. The trishul  represents the three aspects of consciousness - waking, dreaming and sleeping and it means the three gunas - satva, rajas and tamas.

PARAVANI The Paravani, Mayil, Mayura or the peacock is the vahana or vehicle of the Lord Karthikeya, Murugan, Subrahmanya, Skanda, Kumara, Saravana, Arumukha, Devasenapati, Shanmukha, Kathirvela, Guha or Swaminatha. The legend has it that the demon king Surapadman, with the boon he received from the gods had become invincible. He believed that he was immortal and began tormenting all across the universe. Lord Kartikeya confronted the Surapadman and he evaded the Lord’s attacks. The demon transformed himself into a large tree near Tiruchendur. Lord Kartikeya using his Vel, the divine spear struck the tree and split Surapadman into two halves. The demon sought forgiveness from the Lord and transformed the halves into Mayil or peacock and a rooster. The logo of university has the ‘samai’ that is the lamp in the centre symbolising that Sanskrit is like the lamp that is mild yet powerfully showing the path of knowledge though its peculiar qualities like calmness, sacredness and guiding force.
