SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.

JAMTARA COLLEGE, JAMTARA  The emblem of Jamtara College, Jamtara features a circle with the motifs of an open book, a twig with three leaves of bilva tree, a structure of an atom and ‘nagara’ a local drum and the motto of the college in Sanskrit ‘आत्म दीपो भवः’ meaning 'Let One's Atma Illuminate'. The circle is ensconced by a circular border inscribed with the name of the college in Devanagari and English and its year of establishment.
