Food irradiation is a physical process in which food commodities, bulk or pre-packaged are exposed to controlled doses of energy of ionizing radiation such as gamma rays or X-rays. For commercial application of the technology in India, Atomic Energy (Control of Irradiation of Food) Rules were notified in 1991 and later amended in 1996. As per FSS (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, the irradiated products are labelled and can be identified with the 'Radura' logo. This logo in dark green has a solid circle depicting human supported by two leaves depicting agricultural produce is supported by a circle, which fully closed at the bottom half and the top half with five gaps to depict radiation. The product shall have the mandated discretion along with the logo.
