Doordarshan (DD) is an autonomous public service broadcaster founded by the Government of India, which is one of two divisions of Prasar Bharati. It was established on September 15, 1959. DD provides television, online and mobile services throughout metropolitan and regional India, as well as overseas, through the satellite network. Devashis Bhattacharyya is the creator of the ‘DD eye’, Doordarshan’s iconic symbol since its inception. The DD symbol was accompanied by a signature tune given by sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. The symbol was, in fact, upgraded through the late ’80s and ’90s when, under Vikas and Suranjana Satwalekar and animation head Nina Sabnani. The emblem was not meant to be an eye, it just happens to look like one,” says Satwalekar. “The eye alone doesn’t make sense. You don’t just see, you also hear television…the interlocking of the curves and the space between them, it’s about getting information and transmitting it.” Its blue colour emblem has and its tagline ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ meaning ‘Truth Godliness Beauty’ is written below in Devanagari. The emblem has been revised on April 19, 2024 with orange colour.
