ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES PATNA

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Patna (AIIMS Patna) was established under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surakhsha Yojna (PMSSY) during the first phase. The official logo of AIIMS Patna aggregately presents the ethos of its establishment along with the core objective of the medical profession. The base wheel with twelve outer spikes of the logo symbolises the constant and dynamic availability of health care facilities for all sections of society. The base colour synchronises with the soil of Bihar that reflects a deep engagement with the people of the state. Twelve outer spikes render AIIMS Patna’s attributes and aspirations for the healthcare facilities in Bihar and the whole region. These twelve aspirations are the ethos and reason of AIIMS Patna’s establishment. The two serpents entwined around the caduceus represent ‘Stalk of Hermes (Mercury)’ of Greek mythology. Their intersection indicates endocrine glands or chakras topped by a round knob and flanked by wings. Serpents denote the pineal gland and pituitary gland as both look alike. The stalk indicates the spinal column and the knob represents the medulla. The wings at the top signify the two hemispheres of the brain. It resembles the wrinkled cross-section of the brain. While two serpents - signify the two shades of human existence that physicians encounter – Life and Death, wings and rods symbolise medical staff and services. Golden olive leaves are associated with sports and an active lifestyle. It represents enthusiasm, joy and victory. Its motto in Sanskrit ‘सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः।’ meaning ‘सभी रोगमुक्त रहें’ in Hindi and ‘May no one suffer from illness’. The Sanskrit motto establishes the principal goal and vision of AIIMS Patna. The last verse of Garuḍa Purāṇa (35.51) is illustrating the whole idea of 'well-being of all' which is the interim idea of the establishment of the institution.
