AIIMS, Gorakhpur is one of the new AIIMS established as a part of the initiative under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY). Its circular emblem with orange outer border with red banner with its name in Devanagari and English inside has two lamps that divide both the scripts. Inside this banner in a blue background there are motifs of a staff with wings around, which represent the Caduceus, staff of Hermes, which symbolise medical staff; the torch on the winged staff represents everlasting light and wisdom defeating ignorance; a pair of laurels symbolising success and glory; towers of Gorakhnath temple; Parinirvana Stupa of the Gautama Buddha’s Parinirvana Temple; an open book representing knowledge and the Institutes motto in Sanskrit ‘स्वस्थ्य-रक्षनय च विक-प्रशमान्य च’ meaning ‘Protection of Health and Relief from Disease’. “Gorakhpur takes its name from Gorakhnath, who was a saint and travelled widely across India and authored a number of texts that form a part of the canon of Nath Sampradaya. The Gorakhnath Math is a temple of the Nath monastic group of the Nath tradition. The Nath tradition was founded by guru Matsyendranath.
