The cyan-coloured circular emblem of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has an open book supporting a traditional lamp ensconced in a circular border inscribed with its name in Devanagari. Below the seal, on a banner its motto in Sanskrit ‘ meaning ‘असतो मा सद्गमय’ (Yajnavalkya, 1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘From Evil Lead Me to Good’ is written. The lamp refers to light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the book refers to learning, education, knowledge and wisdom and cyan symbolises sky, hope and spring, peace, tranquillity, calmness, relaxation and emotional balance.
