Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied research. The Institute had celebrated its sesquicentennial in October 1996 and now completed more than 175 years of its existence. It was converted to IIT on September 21, 2001 by an Ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation’s seventh Indian Institute of Technology. Its circular emblem in blue and black has Ashoka Chakra in the centre with its rim depicted as a gear wheel. It is surrounded by a border with its motto ‘श्रमं विना न किमपि साध्यम्’ in Sanskrit in the top half and English (‘Nothing Is Possible Without Hard Work’) in the bottom -  half with two spanners as dividers. It is surrounded by a glowing sun, which is ensconced by a border with its name in Devanagari and English divided into two halves by two sitting lions. The circumference of the emblem is finished like a gear.
