DEPARTMENT
In the year 1875, the Government of India established the India Meteorological Department (IMD), bringing all meteorological work in the country under a central authority in Calcutta. The headquarters of IMD were later shifted to Shimla, then to Poona and finally to New Delhi. Its emblem has a weather map of India in blue colour, within a circular border, its name in Devanagari and English are written. These are divided by two Ashoka Chakras. On the crest is the National Emblem of India and at the bottom on a tricoloured banner, its motto ‘Adityath Jayate Vrushtih’ in Sanskrit, meaning ‘Sun Gives Rainfall’ is written.
