PADMA SHRI

The fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri (Noble One in Blossom) medal produced in the Government of India Mint, Kolkata is made of toned bronze. It has a five petalled lotus spread crested by ‘पद्म’ and supported ‘श्री’ is ensconced by an outline design based on square intersecting with rectangles in obverse and the National Emblem of the Lion Capital ensconced by an identical square based outline on the reverse. The lotus with five petals is a symbol of beauty and refers to the absolute purity, honesty, rebirth, self-regeneration and enlightenment. It also refers to divinity, creation and spiritual power.

VALLABHACHARYA TILAK The tilak of Vallbhacharyas is said to consist of two white lines down the forehead, forming a half-circle at its base and a white dot between them. Vallabhacharya (1479–1531 CE) was a devotional philosopher, who founded the Pushti sect in India, following the philosophy of ‘Shuddha Advaita’ (Pure Non-dualism). He wrote a very important commentary called ‘Shri Bhashya’. The Vallabhacharya sect worships Krishna in his character of Bala Gopala.

THE JAMMU & KASHMIR LIGHT INFANTRY India's first Light Infantry was born out of the peoples' response in 1947, to the invasion of Kashmir by Pakistan. In the difficult days of the invasion, the population formed local defence groups. These were later organised into militias responsible for specific sectors, e.g., Leh, Nubra, Jammu, Punch, etc. Over a period, these were grouped into the Militia battalions. Two of these were later converted into the Ladakh Scouts. The militia battalions operated with skill on the Line of Control (LoC) and in the 1971 Indo-Pak War earned three battle honours. In 1972, the militia battalions were brought on par with the army units, and in 1976 designated the Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry (JAK LI). The 8th JAK LI earned great honour by capturing a Pakistani post at 21,000 feet at the Siachen Glacier in 1987. It was established in 1987 and is named after Vardhman Mahaveer, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism.
